Liverpool Road
On 15 September 1830, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened. It was the world's first inter-city passenger railway to operate a timetabled service hauled entirely by steam locomotives. George Stephenson engineered it. The Duke of Wellington attended the opening. Eight locomotives pulled trains carrying around 700 dignitaries from Liverpool to Manchester along 31 miles of track. It was supposed to be a triumph.
At Parkside, roughly halfway between the two cities, the trains stopped to take on water. William Huskisson, the MP for Liverpool and a former Cabinet minister, stepped down onto the tracks. He was struck by Stephenson's locomotive Rocket and died of his injuries that evening in the vicarage at Eccles. He was the most prominent person killed by a railway in the short history of railways. The age of the train announced itself with a death and a celebration on the same day.
When the trains finally reached Manchester, the crowd waiting at Liverpool Road was hostile. Peterloo was eleven years earlier, and Wellington's government had opposed reform. The most famous man in Britain arrived at the station and refused to get off the train. The first inter-city railway journey ended with a death halfway along and a duke who wouldn't set foot on the platform at the end.
The Manchester terminus of that railway was Liverpool Road station, in the area now called Castlefield. First and second class passengers had separate booking halls and waiting rooms. The tracks ran at first floor level behind the building, making it arguably one of the world's first elevated railway stations. The engineer William Fairbairn, working with mathematician Eaton Hodgkinson, designed a parabolic girder to span Water Street where the tracks crossed, widely regarded as the first modern girder bridge. The station is the world's oldest surviving terminal railway station building. It has been Grade I listed since 18 December 1963.
The Site
Liverpool Road station closed to passengers on 4 May 1844, replaced by newer, larger stations as Manchester grew. But the buildings did not go away. The station was converted to a goods yard and remained in railway use, under various operators, for another 131 years. The goods yard finally closed in 1975. In 1978, Greater Manchester Council bought the derelict station for £1. Next to it stands the 1830 Warehouse, the world's first railway warehouse, built to receive goods from the line, also Grade I listed. The Power Hall, a later addition to the site, is Grade II listed.
The museum itself started life in 1969 as the North Western Museum of Science and Industry, housed in temporary premises on Grosvenor Street. The move to Liverpool Road came on 15 September 1983, exactly 153 years after the railway opened. The date was not a coincidence. The museum has changed names over the years and is now officially the Science and Industry Museum, part of the Science Museum Group since 2012. Everyone in Manchester still calls it MOSI.
The site sits in Castlefield, where Manchester's industrial story began. The Roman fort of Mamucium was here. The Bridgewater Canal arrived in the 1760s. The railway followed in 1830. The museum occupies the ground where Manchester first connected itself to the rest of the world, by water and then by rail, and used those connections to build an industrial empire. You cannot understand Manchester without understanding this corner of it.
The Baby
On 21 June 1948, in a room at the Victoria University of Manchester, a machine the size of a living room ran a program for the first time. It was called the Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine, or the Baby. It was built by Frederic Williams, Tom Kilburn, and Geoff Tootill. It used Williams tubes, cathode ray tubes repurposed as memory, storing data as dots of electric charge on the screen. It held 32 words of 32 bits each. One kilobit of memory. It weighed almost a tonne and drew 3,500 watts of power.
The first program, written by Kilburn, calculated the highest proper divisor of 262,144. It was not a useful calculation. It was a proof of concept. The machine performed approximately 3.5 million operations over 52 minutes and produced the correct answer: 131,072. It worked. The world's first electronic stored-program computer had run its first program, and it had done it in Manchester.
The Baby led directly to the Manchester Mark 1, which was operational by April 1949, and that led to the Ferranti Mark 1, the world's first commercially available general-purpose computer. Alan Turing joined the University of Manchester in September 1948 and had already written the Baby's third program, a long division routine, in July that year. In 1951, the Ferranti Mark 1 played the first recorded computer music: the BBC captured God Save the King, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and In the Mood on the same machine. Christopher Strachey's draughts program and his 1952 love-letter generator ran on it too. Manchester didn't just build the first stored-program computer. It taught the thing to play music and write love letters.
The line from the Baby to the device you are reading this on is direct and unbroken. Every laptop, every phone, every server, every cloud, every algorithm runs on the principle that was proved in Manchester on 21 June 1948: that a machine could store its own instructions and execute them.
A working replica of the Baby was built in 1998 for the 50th anniversary and is displayed at the Science and Industry Museum, with regular demonstrations. It is, by some distance, the most important object in the building. It is arguably the most important object in Manchester.

Power and Cotton
The Baby gets the headlines, but the museum is really about something older and louder. The Power Hall closed in 2019 and reopened on 17 October 2025 as Power Hall: The Andrew Law Gallery, after a multi-million pound restoration. Several of the stationary steam engines and mill engines are running again for the first time in over a decade, alongside the Upper Yard, which added 1.4 acres back to the museum site. These are not models. They are the actual engines that powered the cotton mills and factories of Greater Manchester through the 19th century, some of them enormous. Stand next to one when it is running and you can feel why Manchester was the workshop of the world.
The Textiles Gallery tells the cotton story from the raw material to the finished cloth, including one of the most important objects in the history of manufacturing: Arkwright's Water Frame, the spinning machine that mechanised cotton production and triggered the factory system. The Revolution Manchester gallery takes the broader view, covering the city's role in industrialisation, computing, and social change, including one of the earliest Rolls-Royce cars. The sewer pipes are there alongside the cotton and the computers, because public health engineering was as much a part of Manchester's story as the spinning jenny. Dalton's atomic theory. The suffragettes. The Peterloo Massacre. The museum does not shy away from the parts of the story that are uncomfortable, and it does not pretend that progress came without cost.
Still Here
The museum has lost ground in recent years, and it is worth being honest about that. The Air and Space Hall, housed in the council-owned Lower Campfield Market building, closed permanently in 2021 and was given up. The heritage railway, which had run demonstration trips on the original 1830 trackbed, stopped in 2018. The Ordsall Chord, a new rail link built in 2017, had severed the museum's connection to the national network, and the railway closure was confirmed as permanent in June 2024.
But the site is coming back. The Power Hall's six-year closure and its 2025 return, with engines running again, was the strongest signal that the museum is not shrinking quietly. In September 2018, Stephenson's Rocket itself came to the museum on loan, the first time the locomotive had been in Manchester since the 1830s. The Special Exhibition Gallery, designed by Carmody Groarke, opened in 2019. The Grade I listed station building, the 1830 Warehouse, the Baby replica, the Textiles Gallery: all still here. The site is free to enter and draws over 400,000 visitors a year. It is not the biggest museum in Manchester, but it sits on the most historically significant piece of ground in the city.
This is where the railway age started. This is where goods from Liverpool first arrived in Manchester by rail, where cotton was loaded and shipped, where the industrial economy that changed the world was physically connected to its supply chain. A mile up Oxford Road, the Baby proved that a machine could store and run its own instructions. The replica of that machine sits in a museum built on the platform where the first train pulled in.
A railway station from 1830. A computer from 1948. Mill engines that once powered the factories of an empire. All of it in one museum, on one site, in Castlefield, free, and still telling the story of how Manchester made the modern world.
