Rolls & Royce

A baron's son and a miller's boy met in Manchester and created the most famous engineering brand in the world.

Alwalton

Frederick Henry Royce was born on 27 March 1863 in Alwalton, a village in Huntingdonshire. His father James was a farmer and miller. The family was poor. When Henry was nine, his father died in a Greenwich poorhouse at the age of 41. Royce later recalled his childhood in a single line: "My food for the day was often two thick slices of bread soaked in milk."

He had one year of formal schooling, at Croydon British School. After that, he worked. At ten, he was selling newspapers for W.H. Smith at Clapham Junction and Bishopsgate Station. At 13, he was a telegraph delivery boy at the Post Office. In 1878, aged 15, he secured an apprenticeship with the Great Northern Railway at Peterborough, paid for by an aunt. He taught himself the rest, attending evening classes in English, mathematics, and electrical engineering, and studying at the City and Guilds Institute under the physicist William Edward Ayrton.

He worked as a toolmaker in Leeds, then as a tester at an electrical company in Southwark, then as chief engineer at the Lancashire Maxim-Weston Electric Company in Liverpool. When that firm collapsed, he was 21, with £20 in savings and no employer. He used the money to start a business.

Cooke Street

F.H. Royce & Company was founded in 1884 in Blake Street, Hulme, Manchester. Royce put in his £20. His partner Ernest Claremont contributed £50. They started by making electric domestic bells. Within a few years they had moved to larger premises at 1A Cooke Street, off Stretford Road in Hulme, and the product range had expanded to arc lamps, dynamos, electric motors, switchgear, and electrically driven cranes and hoists. By 1899, the company had been reconstituted as Royce Ltd. In 1901, they bought land in Trafford Park and moved the factory there.

Royce was obsessive. Everything had to be right. The tolerances had to be tighter than anyone else's. The finish had to be better. The product had to work flawlessly and keep working. This was not ambition for the sake of profit. It was a compulsion. He could not make something and know it was less than perfect.

In 1902 or 1903, he bought a second-hand Decauville, a small French two-cylinder car. When he went to collect it from Manchester Goods Station, it wouldn't start. He took it apart. He found the engineering sloppy, the tolerances poor, the design careless. In May 1903, he decided to build his own car. The first complete car, a two-cylinder 10 horsepower machine, went on its first test drive on 1 April 1904, a 30-mile round trip to Knutsford and back. He built three in total. They were, by every account, beautifully made.

A man named Henry Edmunds, who was a director of Royce Ltd and a friend of a London motor dealer, drove one. He was so impressed that he wrote a letter. That letter changed everything.

The Meeting

Charles Stewart Rolls was born on 27 August 1877 in Berkeley Square, London. He was the third son of John Allan Rolls, a wealthy Monmouthshire landowner and MP who would be created the 1st Baron Llangattock in 1892. He went to Eton, where the other boys called him "Dirty Rolls" because he was always tinkering with engines. He went to Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1895, read mechanical and applied science, and graduated in 1898. In January 1903, he established C.S. Rolls & Co. in Lillie Hall, Fulham, importing and selling Peugeot and Minerva motor cars. He was 25 years old, an aristocrat, a Cambridge graduate, a pioneer motorist, and a founder member of the Automobile Club of Great Britain. He was looking for a car good enough to put his name on.

Henry Edmunds, who was a member of the Automobile Club and a director of Royce Ltd, had driven one of Royce's cars and recognised immediately what it was. He arranged a meeting. On 4 May 1904, Charles Rolls travelled to Manchester to meet Henry Royce.

The standard version of the story places the meeting at the Midland Hotel on Peter Street, which had opened the previous year and was the grandest hotel in Manchester. Some historians believe it more likely took place at the Great Central refreshment rooms near Manchester London Road station, where Rolls would have arrived by train. Nobody recorded which room they sat in. What matters is what happened in it.

Rolls was taken for a run in one of Royce's cars. He recognised what Edmunds had recognised: the engineering was exceptional. On 23 December 1904, they signed an agreement. Rolls would take every car Royce could produce, in two, three, four, and six-cylinder models, and sell them under the name Rolls-Royce. The cars were unveiled at the Paris Motor Show that same month. On 15 March 1906, Rolls-Royce Limited was formally incorporated. The capital was £60,000. The most famous name in engineering had been born in Manchester, in a meeting between an aristocrat and a self-taught mechanic, brokered by a man who had simply driven the car and known.

The Best Car in the World

The Silver Ghost changed everything. The 40/50 hp six-cylinder chassis was shown at Olympia in November 1906, and the specific car that earned the nickname Silver Ghost was registered in April 1907. It was so refined, so quiet, and so reliable that it earned a reputation no other car had ever achieved. In March 1908, managing director Claude Johnson, the man they called "the hyphen in Rolls-Royce," persuaded the board to concentrate production exclusively on the 40/50 and discontinue all other models. One car, done perfectly. That was the philosophy, and it defined the brand.

A new factory opened in Derby on 9 July 1908, largely designed by Royce himself. Production moved from Manchester to the Midlands. The Cooke Street works and the Trafford Park factory became history. But the car that made the company, and the meeting that made the car, belonged to Manchester.

The partnership was never equal in the way partnerships are supposed to be. Rolls was the front man, the salesman, the aristocratic face of the brand. Royce was the engineer, the obsessive, the man who would not let a part leave the factory unless it was right. Rolls earned £750 a year plus a share of profits. Royce earned £1,250. They needed each other, and the combination worked. The name Rolls-Royce, with the double R, became a synonym for the best of anything.

The Envelope

Charles Rolls did not live to see what his name became. He had always been drawn to the air as much as the road. He was a pioneer balloonist, a co-founder of the club that became the Royal Aero Club, and in October 1908 he became the second Briton to fly in a powered aircraft, piloted by Wilbur Wright near Le Mans. By 1909, he had resigned as Technical Managing Director of Rolls-Royce to focus on aviation. On 2 June 1910, he made the first non-stop double crossing of the English Channel by aeroplane, flying a Wright Flyer there and back in 95 minutes.

On 12 July 1910, at a flying display at Hengistbury Airfield in Bournemouth, the tail of his Wright Flyer broke off. He was killed instantly. He was 32 years old. He was the first Briton to die in a powered aircraft accident, and the eleventh person in the world.

Royce was devastated. His health, which had never been robust, collapsed. He was diagnosed with what was believed to be bowel cancer and given three months to live. He did not die. But he never worked from the factory again. For the remaining 23 years of his life, he designed from his homes in West Wittering in Sussex and Le Canadel on the French Riviera, with a small personal design team separate from the Derby factory, an arrangement orchestrated by Claude Johnson to protect Royce's health. The drawings went back and forth by post. The standards did not drop.

He designed the Eagle aero engine that powered Allied aircraft in the First World War. He designed the R engine that won the Schneider Trophy in 1929 and again in 1931, reaching 407.5 miles per hour. The R engine's descendants led directly to the Merlin, the engine that powered the Spitfire and the Hurricane, the engine that Tilly Shilling fixed with a washer. Royce did not live to see the Merlin fly. The PV-12 engine that became the Merlin first ran on 15 October 1933, barely six months after his death. But the engineering was his.

He was appointed OBE in 1918 and created a baronet in 1930, becoming Sir Henry Royce, 1st Baronet of Seaton. He had no children. The title died with him.

Henry Royce died on 22 April 1933 at Elmstead, his home in West Wittering, aged 70. The night before, he had sat up in bed and drawn a sketch on the back of an envelope. It was a design for an adjustable shock absorber. He was still working. He was always still working. His funeral had no mourners and no flowers. Only two people attended the cremation. That same year, the colour of the Rolls-Royce radiator monogram was changed from red to black. The company said the decision had been made before his death, because the red clashed with certain coachwork colours. The timing said something else.

A miller's boy from Huntingdonshire who left school at ten, taught himself engineering, built three perfect cars in Manchester, and created a name that the world still uses as shorthand for the best there is. A baron's son from Mayfair who drove one of those cars, knew what it was, and staked his name on it. They met on 4 May 1904, in Manchester, because that was where Henry Royce had built his workshop and his cars and his life. The city made the meeting possible. The meeting made the brand.

That's a Manchester legend.
